Surah Al-Baqarah: The Heifer

Revealed at Madinah

2:121
Those to whom We have given the Scripture study it as it deserves to be studied. It is these who believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it,— these then are themselves the losers.

2:122
O Children of Israil! call to mind My favors which I bestowed upon you, and how I distinguished you above the nations.

2:123
And guard against a Day when no soul will benefit from another soul in anything, nor will any compensation be accepted from it, nor any intercession will benefit it, nor will they be helped.

2:124
And remember, his Rabb tried Ibrahim with commands ; so he fulfilled them. He said: “Verily I am going to make you an Imam to mankind.” He said: “And from my offspring?” He replied: “My promise does not apply to the unjust.”

2:125
And behold! We made this House a place of Assembly for mankind and a Sanctuary. And: “You adopt the Maqam-i Ibrahim as a place of Salat.” And We enjoined upon Ibrahim and Ismail: “Sanctify My House for the doers of Tawaf, and the performers of I‘tikaf, and the bowers down, the prostraters.”

2:126
And remember, Ibrahim said: “My Rabb! make this a Secure City, and provide its people with fruits— those of them who believe in Allah and the Future Day.” He said: “And whoever disbelieves I shall let him enjoy for a while, and then I shall drive him to the chastisement of the Fire; and an evil destination!”

2:127
And behold! Ibrahim was raising the foundation of the House, and Ismail. “Our Rabb! accept from us. You indeed, You are the all-Hearing, the all-Knowing.

2:128
“Our Rabb! and make us both Muslims to You, and from our offspring a nation Muslims to You, and show us our ways of dedication, and turn towards us. You indeed, You are the oft-Returning, most Rewarding.

2:129
“Our Rabb! and raise up among them a rasul out of them, he may recite to them Your Messages, and teach them the Scripture, and the Wisdom, and purify them. You indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the most Wise.”

2:130
And who shrinks from the religion of Ibrahim except him who makes himself a fool? And We indeed chose him in this world, and he will indeed be in the Hereafter among the righteous.

2:131
Behold! his Rabb told him: “Submit yourself.” He said: “I submit myself to the Rabb of all the worlds.”

2:132
And Ibrahim bequeathed this to his children, and Ya‘qub: “O my children! surely Allah has chosen for you the religion, so do not die unless you be Muslims.”

2:133
Or, were you witnesses when death appeared before Ya‘qub, when he said to his children: “What will you worship after me?” They said: “We shall worship your God and the God of your forefathers— Ibrahim and Isma‘il and Is-haq— the One God, and to Him we shall be Muslims.”

2:134
That is a community that have passed away; for them is what they earned, and for you is what you earn; and you will not be questioned as to what they used to do.

2:135
And they say: “Become Judaized or Christians, you will be guided.” You say: “Rather the Faith of Ibrahim, the Hanif.” And he was not of the polytheists.

2:136
You say: “We believe in Allah, and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim and Isma‘il and Is-haq, and Ya‘qub and the Tribes, and that was given to Musa and ‘Isa, and what was given to the nabis from their Rabb; we make no discrimination among any of them, and to Him do we be Muslims.”

2:137
Now, if they believe just as you believe in Him, then they are guided indeed; but if they turn back, then they are only in opposition. So Allah will surely suffice you against them; for He is the all-Hearing, all-Knowing.

2:138
“The dye of Allah, and who is better than Allah in dye? And we are worshippers of Him.”

2:139
You say: “Do you dispute with us regarding Allah, while He is our Rabb and your Rabb? And to us are our deeds, and to you be your deeds; and we are sincere to Him.”

2:140
Or do you say that Ibrahim and Isma‘il and Is-haq and Ya‘qub and the Tribes were Jews or Christians? Ask: “Do you know better, or Allah?” And who is more unjust than him who conceals a testimony which he has from Allah, while Allah is not unaware of what you do?
